About the Lab: DRDL is one of the premier laboratory of DRDO which has expertise in design and development of strategic and tactical missile systems to meet... the specific requirements of Indian Armed Forces. To develop guided missile weapon systems in India, a Special Weapon Development Team (SWDT) was formed in 1958. This team was later expanded into a full fledge laboratory in June 1961 at the Defence Laboratory (DRDL), Metcalf House, Delhi. The DRDL moved to Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad in 1962. In order to equip with state of the art missile technology and ensure self reliance in defence systems, DRDL was entrusted with the task of developing various Missile Systems through Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) initiated in the year 1983. DRDL took a quantum jump through IGMDP by taking up design and development of various types of Missile systems simultaneously and leading them to limited series/full scale production. After six years of commencement of IGMDP, the very first missile PRITHVI blasted off to a perfect flight from SHAR (ISRO Launch range at Sriharikota).
